To avoid all these drawbacks, Liu and his colleagues came up with a simple and ingenious solution: add a small “bubble” to the engine’s air intake to facilitate the combustion of kerosene with shock waves, while maintaining a small chamber.
This new design helps control shock bursts in a smaller space, creating a consistent thrust.
The new Chinese engine uses RP-3 kerosene, which is commonly found in Chinese airports, the South China Morning Post reported.
