The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, on Wednesday (08.17.2022) urged the Russian military to withdraw “unconditionally and as soon as possible” from the territory of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in the southeast of the country, gradually allowing both Ukrainians to return to safety. and international.
Ukrainian diplomats, nuclear scientists and the International Atomic Energy Agency are in constant contact and working to send an IAEA mission to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, Zelensky recalled in his regular nightly news broadcast by official media.
The Ukrainian leader said that only full transparency and a controlled environment in and around the nuclear power plant “can ensure a gradual return to normal nuclear security for the Ukrainian government, the international community and the IAEA.”
“The Russian military must withdraw from the nuclear plant and all neighboring areas, and withdraw its military equipment from the plant. This must happen unconditionally and as soon as possible,” he demanded.
He added that Ukraine is ready to ensure proper IAEA control, and the related work “can be sent to the Saporitia plant legally, very quickly and efficiently.”
Zelensky noted that on the military front, the Karkiv areas in Avdiyivka and Bakhmut and other areas are “the areas where the most difficult fighting is taking place at the moment”.
He admitted that “the occupiers are trying to improve their situation, but strategically it is useless for them” in the Zaporizhia region and parts of the south of the country.
Ukrainian soldiers will “gradually destroy the capabilities of the invaders, and the day will come when the enemy will die in Zaporizhia, in the south, in the east of the country, in Crimea. The invaders will die. Like snow on the sun”.
